Transformative Journeys in Leadership: Voices from the PBLD Programme

Our Place-Based Leadership Development (PBLD) programme for Cohort 2 of intersectoral leaders in Nairobi County kicked off with great energy in July 2024. The initial workshop and the subsequent delivery of Modules One and Two have sparked enthusiasm and deep engagement among participants. As they dive further into the programme, their insights and shared experiences highlight PBLD's transformative impact as a catalyst for profound personal and professional growth. Here, we spotlight the transformative experiences of four individuals whose leadership journeys have been reshaped by the programme. Equipped with invaluable tools, they are now leading with purpose, empathy, and a nuanced understanding of the communities they serve.

"Inspired by a colleague from the first PBLD cohort, I joined the program with the support of my seniors. The PBLD Programme has proven to be invaluable in my daily leadership roles, challenging me to critically evaluate the broader implications of my decisions and enhancing my interpersonal interactions one step at a time. This experience has fostered a shift in mindset and behaviour, equipping me with the tools to create a lasting, positive legacy that drives innovation and progress."

Paul Njuguna, DCI Training Academy, Nairobi

"The PBLD Programme has been a transformative experience, equipping me with essential tools to excel and drive positive change within my organization. I’ve learned the importance of self-awareness, resilience, and embracing a growth mindset. By prioritizing key competencies like self-motivation, effective communication and adaptability, I’m better positioned to inspire others and cultivate a culture of continuous improvement. One of the most valuable lessons I've taken away is its emphasis on the significance of doing the right things and aligning actions with organizational goals. This has empowered me to make a meaningful impact within my institution and society at large."

Halakhe, Police Officer, Mathare Police Station

“Inspired by a friend’s transformative experience in the PBLD Programme, I embarked on this journey with high expectations. Through PBLD, I’ve deepened my self-awareness and begun to cultivate essential leadership skills. Reflective practice has helped me forge a stronger sense of self and professional identity. What has stood out for me is storytelling which was particularly enlightening, empowering me to share my experiences and motivate others. As a mentor and advocate for digital disability inclusion, I’ve found my voice through storytelling to empower the disability community. I am now eager to use these skills to inspire action, advocate for change, and raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with disabilities.”

Winnie Koki Gitau, Partnership Lead/M&E Officer, Gifted Community Center, Kibera

“The PBLD Programme has ignited a spark of my understanding of leadership, emphasizing the importance of context and community engagement. The hands-on, practical component allowed me to apply the principles of place-based leadership in real-world situations, deepening my understanding of how to lead effectively within my community. This experience has reshaped my approach as a probation officer, enabling me to craft more tailored, context-specific interventions that truly meet the needs of the communities and clients I serve.”

Abiud Ngeno, Probation Officer
